Communications & Storytelling
I’m a writer at heart. And a thoughtful one at it. I have developed and produced narrative storytelling in text, photo, and video form – serving a variety of communications. I believe that drafting a compelling message is a process of craft and strategy in equal measure, and that a story can only be conveyed effectively when created with cultural sensitivity, channel optimisation, and the ideal end-user in mind.
I have managed the global internal editorial calendar at Airbnb, as well as external regional policy and corporate content calendars – curating, creating and editing news, activities and connection-driven stories across a variety of channels, including email, newsletters, social media, events, blog and web. In these roles, I’ve drafted announcements and online articles to tight deadlines, navigating complex stakeholder networks and (sometimes) fast-changing priorities, while balancing short term needs with long-term strategy.
A good story doesn’t tell itself. It needs creativity, conceptual thinking, and prioritisation. Of the emotion you’d like evoke, of the data you want customers to remember, or any other type of engagement you’re hoping to establish. Storytelling is more than a tactic or a technique in my book, it’s the driving force behind impactful communication strategies. Some examples of my work:
- Regulatory & Policy Communications: Educating Airbnb Hosts about new and upcoming regulations, breaking down complex rules into easy to understand steps to take (see example here).
- Brand & Corporate Communications: Influencing brand sentiment through community-centric narratives about Airbnb, and delivering local adaptations of global campaigns to the public.
- Strategic Partnership Marketing: Developing story-driven, multi-channel content that brought together destinations, conscious travel and the benefits of home sharing – like this project in Iceland.
- Internal & Community Engagement: Amplifying advocacy (of Airbnb Hosts as well as employees) through relatable, honest and authentic user experiences.
- Executive Communications & Thought Leadership: Bringing business priorities, current events and cultural values together in talking points and coaching around leadership presentations.
I have 5+ years of experience at Airbnb writing user-friendly content as part of retention-focused CRM campaigns, guiding Airbnb hosts through key changes on the platform and in their user experience. Working with legal, policy, product and business teams, I’ve ensured that copy served to users was consistent, accurate, compliant with regulations, and most of all, clear & simple – whether it concerned a help centre article, push notification or ‘simple’ CTA button.
